Frank Baum Stories - Sing a Song o' Sixpence

Frank Baum was an American author who lived from 1856 to 1919.  Frank Baum is, of course, best known for his Wizard of Oz stories.  I'm afraid they're a bit long for me to include on the website.  However, he also wrote a lovely set of short stories for children based on Mother Goose nursery rhymes.  He also wrote quite a few poems.  My girls and I love his stories based on nursery rhymes and I thought I'd try to share some with you as I don't often see them anymore (which I think is rather sad as he's such a great writer).  They're actually an interesting read for grades 3 thru 5 -- it tickles many children to read 'the story behind the nursery rhyme' -- it's sort of like getting the inside scoop.

Sing a song o' sixpence, a handful of rye,
Four-and-twenty blackbirds baked in a pie;
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
Was not that a dainty dish to set before the King?

Now, come read the story behind it all!
