Each week we have a special "letter of the week".  During the week, we make crafts that feature the letter of the week and practice the upper and lower cases of the letter.

WHAT WE DO - ACTIVITIES:  During the week we're learning about a particular letter (in this case the Letter G), we'll often do an activity celebrating that letter.  Some ideas for the letter G are helping in the Garden (er, Grow starts with G too), visiting Grandma and/or Grandpa or playing a Game.

If you don't have a garden or it's the middle of winter, make an indoor garden.  Decorate some homemade pots and grow plants.  Some quick (and cool) things to grow are:

  • apple or orange seeds (eat the fruit, remove three seeds and plant it in a small pot of soil.  Place in a sunny window to grow.  Thin to one "tree" if a few come up)
  • Avacodo pit:  Make Guacomole (hmmm, that starts with a G doesn't it?)  Take out the pit.  Put toothpicks in each side.  Take a small glass or jar and fill partially with water.  Balance the pit on top of the glass using the toothpicks to hold it out of the water.  The pit should be about 1/2 emerged.  Watch it grow (and I do mean watch it!  It grows fast and tall!)
  • Sweet Potato:  Cut in half and plant in a largish pot (big margarine tubs or a 4 litre milk container with the top cut off work).  It will grow quite a nice vine.

WHAT WE DO - CRAFTS: Instead of using crayons or paint, glue coloured aquarium Gravel to your picture (gravel can be purchased at any pet store or at places like Walmart).  You can typically get it in small bags so can buy a few different colours.  We did this with a picture of a Goldfish in a bowl (blue for the water, Green for the plants/coral and orange for the goldfish).  Click here to print the picture).

WHAT WE DO - FOOD:  Groovy Grapes make a great snack and a great craft during G week!
